Mirror-Polished Tooling: Why Steel Finish Shows Up on Every Gummy
Same cavity CAD, different polish - different gloss, release, and residue. What to ask before the steel tool is cut.

On this page
Two trays can share cavity CAD, cavity count, and compound and still dump different gloss. Buyers who never ask about steel polish find out on the first sticky pectin run.
Tray path: custom silicone gummy molds. Finish choice also: glossy vs matte cavity finish.

Steel finish becomes cavity finish
Compression copies the steel face into the silicone. The gummy touches that silicone face. Scratches and roughness travel steel → tray → candy.
What polish changes
- Gloss - mirror steel → glossier candy; rougher steel → more matte. Neither is "better" until you name the look.
- Release - smoother faces usually peel sticky pectin / gelatin cleaner. Draft and Shore still matter - polish is one root cause among several in gummy demolding design.
- Cleaning - finer finish holds sugar film less; residue builds slower between washes.
- Logo / texture - fine features stay crisp when the tool face is not a haze of tool marks.
Polish is a spec
Call a numbered / SPI-style finish (or the plant's equivalent) in the RFQ. Sticky food trays usually want finer polish than an industrial gasket. Highest polish costs more tooling time - specify what the product needs, not the max catalog grade by default.
What to ask
- What polish level is planned for this tool?
- Can we see a sample face or photo at that level before press?
- If release or gloss is already bad, is tooling finish on the suspect list?
How it ties to demold
Polish sits next to draft, nest pitch, and Shore. Process context: how gummy molds are compression-made. Prototype / first-article timing after CAD lock is commonly 3-5 business days for a soft path; steel polish adds tooling days before the first tray.
/contact/ - send photos of sticky trays and the look you want.
FAQ
Always worth the cost? For glossy sticky candy, usually yes relative to whole tooling. Ask for the delta on your quote.
Re-polish an old tool? Sometimes. Condition and geometry decide. A new tool to a named finish is often cleaner than hoping a rework fixes release.
Mirror for every food mold? No. Match appearance and release. Matte brand looks do not need mirror steel.
