Candle Molds

Overview

WYD makes custom silicone molds for candle brands and production teams that need a defined finished shape rather than another catalog design. A project can start with a drawing, CAD file, sample candle or reference photos. We first review the finished dimensions, wax system, pouring method, wick position and expected output; those details matter more than an attractive render of an empty mold.

A deep pillar, a textured figurine and a multi-cavity votive tray do not release or handle in the same way. Parting lines, support, wall thickness and access for demolding should be decided around the actual wax and cooling cycle. For a new shape, use a sample mold to pour and release the intended formulation before approving repeat production.

WYD is a multi-category custom mold manufacturer. Many fragrance brands order wax melt molds and soap molds alongside candle tooling under one project-keeping seasonal geometry consistent across product lines. Those are separate tools unless DFM, material grade, cleaning and documentation are reviewed for a dual-use request. Explore the full workflow on manufacturing services or request a quote.

Who This Is For

Our candle mold program serves buyers who need signature shapes and repeatable cavity quality at volumes that do not justify custom metal mold fabrication.

Primary buyer personas

  • Independent candle makers scaling from stock aluminum and polycarbonate into branded pillar and figurine lines
  • Home fragrance DTC brands launching seasonal shape collections on Shopify, Faire, and retail
  • Spa, hotel, and amenity suppliers producing logo votives and guest-room pillars
  • Gift and subscription box companies bundling exclusive mold shapes into maker kits
  • Wholesale private-label programs testing regional silhouettes before scaling wick-and-pour lines

When custom silicone candle molds are the right choice

  • Your shape has undercuts, texture, or 3D geometry stock metal molds cannot flex-release
  • You need a sample mold to pour your own wax before you lock a seasonal launch
  • MOQ 20 fits your collection test budget better than a single expensive metal tool
  • You want one supplier for matching wax melts and pillars

See Candle & Soap solutions for bundled home fragrance tooling.

Materials & Hardness

Silicone selection starts with the candle-making process, not a hardness chart copied from another project. Give us the wax or blend, fragrance and dye load, maximum temperature when the mold is filled, finished candle size, expected pour frequency and how operators intend to remove the candle. A material that flexes enough to release a detailed figure may not give a tall, unsupported mold the stability it needs while full of hot wax.

We review hardness together with cavity depth, wall thickness, external support and parting-line design. If the mold will be used with more than one formulation, test each intended formulation: cooling shrinkage, surface finish and release can change even when the shape stays the same. Final material grade and any temperature suitability should be confirmed against the selected material's supplier data and a trial using the buyer's process.

For an RFQ, send the wax supplier or formulation if available, your normal and maximum fill temperatures, a photo or drawing of the finished candle, target cavity count and the number of pours expected per shift. If those details are not final, identify what is still being tested so the quote can state its assumptions.

Design & DFM

Candle mold DFM balances brand geometry with how the wax cools, where the wick sits, and how operators will demold. We review cavity geometry before a master is made; the quote states which cavities are in scope.

Critical design parameters

  • Draft / taper: Set against cavity height, wax shrink, and whether the candle is peeled, inverted, or split out. There is no one draft that fits every pillar.
  • Wall thickness: Sized for pour volume, cooling time, and whether the filled mold needs external support
  • Parting lines: On two-part figurine molds-placed to minimize visible seam on finished candle
  • Wick holes and centering: Diameter and position matched to your wick tab and production method
  • Base flatness: Freestanding pillars need level bases. A container-shape mold is a pour tool for wax that later sits in a jar or tin-it is not a silicone liner left in a burning vessel.
  • Relief depth: Logo and texture depth tuned so wax does not lock in fine undercuts

File formats we accept

Send STEP, STL, PDF drawings, reference photos, or physical samples. No CAD? Provide sketch dimensions and our team models on WYD services.

Common DFM adjustments we recommend

  1. Adding taper to pillar walls that would otherwise vacuum-lock on cooling shrink
  2. Relocating parting lines on figurines to hide seams on low-visibility faces
  3. Thickening fragile protruding features (ears, antlers, handles) before master cut
  4. Splitting extreme undercuts into two-part designs when a one-piece peel is unlikely

Manufacturing Process

WYD follows a design-to-mold workflow for candle projects. Timing is confirmed on the quotation after files and development scope are clear-not as a blanket SLA for every inquiry.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. Inquiry and quote: Share shape references, wax type, fill temperatures, cavity count, and quantity. We typically reply within 12 hours. A complete brief helps us review the manufacturing path; a quotation depends on the required inputs.
  2. CAD and DFM review: Draft, wall thickness, shrink handling, and wick geometry. Extra CAD turns are scoped on the quote-they are not an unlimited included package.
  3. Master model: CNC, 3D print, or a hand-finished positive depending on texture and tolerance needs.
  4. Sample mold: For suitable projects, first-article tooling is typically prepared in 3-5 business days after design approval and confirmation of the development requirements. Shipping is extra. Use that sample to pour and release your formulation before bulk quantity.
  5. Production run: Soft-mold production starts from 20 pieces per approved design, in the grade locked after sample review.
  6. QC and packaging: Cavity inspection, dimensional check, export-ready packing as stated on the order.

A sample pour is strongly recommended for figurines, deep relief, and large pillars-especially when testing a new wax blend.

Related Wax-Melt Development Example

The ILY handshape wax-melt project shows concept imagery, dimensioned 3D layouts and a silicone sample, with each stage identified. See the ILY wax-melt development example for the published design records. This is a wax-melt tooling example; a pillar or figurine candle needs a separate review of its wick arrangement, support and release path.

Customization Options

Cavity size, layout, finish, and identification can be specified to the brand and the pour workflow. What we can hold on a given shape is confirmed in DFM-not every request is a one-piece sleeve.

Format and layout

  • Pillar diameters and heights custom to your SKU matrix (votive through large statement pillars)
  • Container-shape pour molds sized to the inner geometry of a jar or tin (wax is poured in the silicone, then the finished candle is placed in the vessel-not a liner that stays in a burning container)
  • Multi-cavity production trays for votives and tealights
  • Matched gift-set collections with coordinated shapes

Surface and branding

  • Relief textures: botanical, geometric, bark, linen, and brand logo deboss
  • Matte or gloss cavity finish affecting candle surface sheen
  • Two-part 3D figurines with registration keys

Identification

  • Color-coded silicone per scent line or season
  • Engraved SKU codes on mold flange for production floor tracking

Discuss options via Contact. Quote timing is confirmed after the brief is complete.

Material Safety

Candle molds are specified for wax, fragrance and the intended pouring conditions. Keep them separate from food-contact molds. A food version of the same shape requires a separate material and documentation review.

Documentation available

  • Material composition statements when the selected grade has a supplier statement we can pass through
  • Batch certificates of conformance only when requested and when that grade is produced with batch paperwork
  • RoHS-relevant declarations only where the selected compound has them-requesting a file is not the same as a product certification

Finished candle product labeling, CLP, and regional chemical compliance remain the brand owner's responsibility. Candle wax tooling is not a food-contact mold. A food version of the same shape, or a soap version of the same shape, needs its own material, cleaning, and documentation review-do not assume one tool can move between wax, soap, and food without that review.

MOQ, Lead Time & Pricing

Applicable soft-mold production starts from 20 molds per approved design. For suitable projects, sample-mold preparation typically takes 3–5 business days after design approval and confirmation of the development requirements. Production duration after sample approval is stated on the quotation-it is not a universal 2-4 week promise. Shipping time is additional.

What affects pricing

  • Pillar height, diameter, and silicone volume per tool
  • Two-part figurine complexity vs simple pillar sleeve
  • Texture depth and hand-finished master labor
  • Multi-cavity tray count and flatness tolerance
  • Quantity breaks-ask for the breaks that apply to your design; listed volume bands are not a price card

If you have a firm in-hand date (for example a Q4 fragrance launch), put that date on the RFQ so production and freight can be planned backward. Do not treat a 6-8 week calendar as a guaranteed door-to-door window. Request a quote. Budgeting tips: custom molds for small business.

Quality Control

  • Material batch traceability when the selected grade is run with batch records
  • Master-to-CAD dimensional verification before molding
  • Cavity depth and diameter checks on pillar tools
  • Parting-line flash control on two-part figurine molds
  • Tray flatness verification on multi-cavity votive sheets
  • Surface defect screening-blemishes transfer to candle faces

Whether production waits for a sample-pour sign-off is written on the order. Repeat reorders of an unchanged tool can skip a new sample when both sides confirm the same CAD and grade.

Packaging & Shipping

  • Individual poly bag or foam wrap per mold; tall pillars shipped with rigid support to prevent cavity distortion
  • Carton packing with corner protection; palletization for OEM volume
  • Express courier, air freight, and sea freight-transit time depends on destination, incoterm, and the carrier booked on the order. We do not publish a universal 3-7 day door-to-door figure.
  • Ship-to countries are confirmed per order

Provide incoterms preference (EXW, FOB, DAP, DDP) at order. Flag in-hand dates for holiday collections so the quotation can show whether that date is realistic.

Common Mistakes

Candle mold errors surface at demold, on the pillar surface, or after a dozen pours-not in the CAD screenshot.

  1. Wrong hardness for the pour: A grade that peels a detailed figure can sag on a tall, unsupported pillar while it is still full of hot wax. Specify formula, fill temperature, and demold method at quote.
  2. No draft on tall pillars: Vacuum lock and sidewall scuffing when wax shrinks onto vertical walls.
  3. Fill temperature not shared: Grade suitability comes from supplier data plus a trial at your actual fill temperature-not a generic "heat-resistant" label.
  4. One mold spec for incompatible formulas: Switching wax systems without a new trial can change release, surface, and tear even when the cavity is unchanged.
  5. Skipping prototype pour: First bulk order should follow a cooled test candle you approve-especially for figurines and relief.
  6. Wick hole misalignment: Specify wick tab size and production method during DFM-not after tooling is cut.
  7. Ordering pillars and melts from different vendors: Brand geometry drifts. WYD tools both under one CAD library.
  8. Storing large molds under stack weight while warm: Cavities deform; store flat after cool-down.

Extended FAQ

What pour temperature can WYD candle molds handle?

Share your normal and maximum fill temperatures from the wax SDS. We confirm the selected grade against supplier data and a trial in your process. Published soy or paraffin temperature bands are not a mold rating for every order.

Do you support soy, paraffin, and coconut wax?

Those formulas are common RFQs. Each shrinks and releases differently. Do not copy Shore A from a previous soy job onto paraffin (or the reverse) without a trial.

What is the MOQ?

Applicable soft-mold production starts from 20 molds per approved design. A sample mold is quoted separately and is not that production MOQ.

How fast is the prototype?

Typically 3-5 business days for suitable projects after CAD approval and confirmation of the development scope. Shipping is additional.

Can one mold work for soap and candles?

Not by default. Soap and wax differ in chemistry, temperature, and residue. If you want one cavity family for both, say so on the RFQ so hardness, cleaning, and documentation can be reviewed-or we will recommend separate tools.

Do you make two-part molds for 3D figurine candles?

Yes-with parting lines, registration keys, and seam placement to minimize flash on the finished surface.

How do candle molds relate to wax melt molds?

Pillars and containers cover larger-format candles. Wax melt molds focus on clamshell inserts and snap bars. Many brands order both from WYD.

Will silicone tolerate repeated heating cycles?

Service life depends on wax, fragrance, pour temperature, mold geometry and demolding. Use trial pours to inspect surface wear, tearing and dimensional change before setting a replacement schedule.

Can you add wick holes or centering features?

Yes-specify wick size, tab style, and centering pin diameter in your brief.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes-express, air, and sea freight worldwide.

How do I start?

Submit finished candle size, wax or blend, fill temperatures, and quantity via Contact. Quote timing depends on whether the brief is complete.
