How Silicone Gummy Molds Are Made: Compression From Steel to Tray

A gummy tray is not poured like an RTV soap block. It is a sheet of HCR pressed in steel. If you know the steps, you know why draft and post-cure show up in the quote.

Product path: custom silicone gummy molds. Compounding: rubber compounding. Inspection: pre-shipment inspection.

Silicone gummy tray
Steel tool, compound, press, post-cure - then the first dump.

Design and tooling

Review shrink, draft, pitch, wall. Then CNC a steel tool. That steel is the cavity map for every tray. Fix it in CAD, not after cut.

Compounding

HCR gum, filler, color, cure on the mill. Color streaks and wrong Shore start here, not on the press.

Load, press, cure

Blanks into a hot tool. Heat and pressure fill logos and texture. Cure under clamp.

Trim and post-cure

Flash comes off by hand or trim gear. Food-contact trays usually get a post-cure oven step at production thickness - that is not a rinse at your plant. We do not call the factory FDA-approved.

Inspect and pack

Dimensions, cavity match, Shore, face defects vs the golden sample. Confirm whether a first wash is done before ship or is on you before first food contact.

Why buyers should care

  • CAD review is cheap. Recut steel is not.
  • One tool drives cavity grams across the tray.
  • Post-cure is not replaced by a "food grade" color.
  • Flash at the cavity lip shows up on every dump.

What to send

  1. Shape or reference gummy.
  2. Cavity count, tray envelope, depositor pitch.
  3. Target grams.
  4. Qty. Soft-tray MOQ is often 20 per design.
  5. Destination market and docs needed.

Prototype after CAD lock is commonly 3-5 business days. Production days are in the quote.

FAQ

Only compression? No. RTV for prototypes and odd shapes. Compression for repeat trays. RTV vs HTV.

Full timeline? 3-5 business days after CAD lock for a prototype. Not a universal 2-3 day production promise.

Stage photos? Ask before the PO. Many lots can send inspection stills before ship.
