Pre-Shipment Inspection for Custom Silicone Molds: What Gets Checked Before Your Order Ships
What WYD checks on a custom silicone mold lot before cartons close: appearance, dimensions, cavity detail, Shore, function, cleanliness, and what photos to ask for.

On this page
You can lock a good prototype and still get a bad bulk lot if nobody compares the carton to that sample. Pre-ship inspection is the last cheap catch.

Why inspection matters for silicone molds
Trays flex. Multi-cavity sheets copy one bad edge into every pour. A torn lip or a shallow logo is not a one-piece cosmetic - it is every bar or gummy from that pocket. Compare each lot to the approved sample, not to a stock photo.
The main checks
1. Appearance
- Flash that was not trimmed.
- Bubbles, pinholes, voids.
- Specks or foreign particles.
- Tears or collapsed cavity walls.
- Color vs the approved plaque.
2. Dimensions
Overall envelope, thickness, cavity size and depth vs drawing and prototype. On a multi-cavity tray, cavities should match each other if you sell by weight.
3. Cavity detail
Logo, text, polish vs texture - against the golden sample.
4. Shore and feel
Durometer in the specified window. Hand flex and rebound. Soft rubber is not measured like a steel insert - condition matters. Related: silicone quality control.
5. Function
Does the tray sit flat? Does it hold shape loaded? Does a test pour or a dry flex release without tearing?
6. Cleanliness and odor
Food-contact lots should be clean. Strong smell often means post-cure was skipped. That is not an FDA-approved-factory sticker.
7. Pack and count
Qty, labels, and protection so the lot arrives as it left.
Sampling: how many pieces are checked?
Larger OEM lots may use an AQL sample plan. Small custom mold orders are often 100% visual. Ask which rule applies to your PO and what defect classes are allowed. We do not pretend one AQL badge covers every SKU.
What you can ask for
- Photos or a short video before packing.
- A written check with key measurements.
- A retained sample from the lot.
- A golden sample locked before bulk.
- Third-party inspection on large or high-value lots - quoted separately.
Signs of a weak inspection process
- Nobody can name what is checked.
- No approved sample.
- No photos or numbers.
- Defects waved off instead of traced.
How inspection fits the whole process
Inspectors can only check what you froze: DFM, prototype, named grade. Supplier checklist: how to choose a custom silicone mold manufacturer.
Send CTQs, sample photos you care about, and destination to /contact/. Bao'an since 2006. Soft-tray MOQ often 20. Prototype commonly 3-5 business days after CAD lock.
FAQ
Inspection photos before ship? Agree the shots with the PO: cavity close-ups, a size check, packed cartons.
If it fails? Rework or replace before the carton. Write that before deposit.
Is PSI extra? Basic factory check is part of production. Third-party and long reports may be a line item.
